Florida's most widespread contaminants is bacteria, nitrates, and lead. Other chemicals like ethylene dibromide (EDB), tetrachlorethylene (PCE) and have also been found in isolated areas. Contaminated drinking water can cause several diseases, and is sometimes fatal to vulnerable people.
According to The Orlando Sentinel, The Sunshine State may be outlined with beautiful beaches, but the drinking water may not be as clean as you would like. A new survey tested water systems across the United States, and ranked Florida as having the second worst drinking water in the nation, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
To compile this report, Orlando Sentinel staffers devoted six months to: unraveling historic uses, complexities and health concerns of 1,4-dioxane; learning how it infiltrated the Floridan Aquifer; retracing actions of the state’s health and environment departments and the three local governments and their utilities; and seeking out perspectives in Central Florida and elsewhere in the nation.
The discovery of 1,4-dioxane in Seminole County drinking water and the ensuing responses epitomizes a national challenge: there are hundreds of poorly known contaminants infiltrating air, water, and food. Even as scientists can measure their tiniest quantities, the chemicals remain largely unregulated and unwatched.
